Mcavity: plugin

Default Category Plugin

Gautam Patel

So I was bashing my head against a wall trying to figure out how best to specify a default category for all posts — one to which, if no category was specified, a post would be assigned, particularly in a multiblog environment.

I posted a request out to ProNet:

In a multiblog environment, is there a plugin/hack/workaround to allow for a default category for all posts?

Posting from a third party service like posterous.com, for example, publishes the post without any category at all. I’d like every post to be assigned, at the minimum, to a default category; and that default category should be one I can specify on a per-blog basis.

Editing the edit_entry.tmpl file maks little sense since it triggers a system-wide default category (even assuming I’d know where to start editing that file, and I don’t).

I got several answers, including one that pointed to Dan Wolfgang’s online tutorial for doing this. That didn’t help much, because it really works system-wide and doesn’t much help when you’re running multiblog.

Dan came back with a link to his updated and far more convenient plugin. It works like a charm. Load up the plugin as usual and for each blog in your system you can then specify a default category. It’s absolutely essential, and a must-have.
