J’accuse Revisited

Turning the tables?

Was I wrong in what I said? This entire incident about the South African judge being accused of raping a fellow delegate at the World Social Forum in a South Bombay hotel sounds very, very odd.

The lady returned to the man’s room after everyone else (including herself) left a little earlier. Apparently, she had “something important to discuss”. At 3:15 in the morning? It’s very doubtful that she had anything of such shattering importance that it couldn’t wait till the next day. And her husband says that she always carries condoms because of “the nature of her work”. What precisely that might be is, of course, unknown. In any case, the guy does so. Forty five minutes later she returns to her room — with the condom!

Surely anyone might be forgiven for thinking that the guy’s been truly and properly had. And how.
